Name Of The Place (Post#62) : Brisbane Arcade And Shocking History of Founders Family

Photos of the day are all about the name of Brisbane Arcade which built in 1923. The building is now part of Queensland heritage asset. Even I had seen four arcade shopping  centers across Australia, but I can still see uniqueness of the arcade from the other traditional shopping arcade as it reflects the style in Europe arcades during late 18th century. And while checking more information about Brisbane Arcade, I had learned in the process from their official website the shocking story behind the father of the founder of the arcade. These photos are part of Brisbane Open House Event Tour last October 2013.

Brisbane Arcade was established by Dr James Mayne and his sister Mary Emelia Mayne. Their father named Patrick Mayne sets up his family home and butcher shop in Queen Street where the arcade standing today in 1849. And before Patrick died, in 1865, he confessed that he murdered and robbed timber cutter Robert Cox in 1848. This confession shunned the Mayne family and none of his children marries or has children.

The Mayne siblings became great benefactors to the University of Queensland. He gave the university the land for their St Lucia campus. Brisbane Arcade was also established in a Trust and proceeds from the Trust still benefit the University of Queensland Medical School and medical research.

Photos of the day are all about the name of Rottnest Island. What’s with the name? If you will hear the name of the island, you will definitely think of something else? What is it? Does the word “rat” rings the bell? Historically, when Europeans discovered the island, one of the first things they noted was the sightings of wild cat which then mistook as giant rat and named the island as “Rotte nest” which came from the Dutch word “Rattenest”, meaning “rat nest”. And the so-called giant rats that they saw is actually Quokka. These photos are part of Rottnest Island Tour October 2016.

Photo of the day is all about the name of an old cemetery just beside Broome Town Beach called as Pioneer Cemetery. I saw the said cemetery while I was walking towards the shore. After enjoying the town’s beach, I spent sometime to look on some grave until I learned that some of the people buried in the cemetery were people who died during the air-raid in Broome last 1942 before it moved to their permanent cemetery in Perth, Holland or Java after the war. For me, it is now a historical or heritage cemetery as it is now more than 120 year old cemetery. These photos are part of 2 Days Broome and Surround Tour October 2016.

And the most sellable to the group were ice pop, ice cream, cold drinks or any type of frozen food as the sunny day helped us to crave for it. The place was short drive from the camp we came from. When I visited Australia.com and when I installed its apps to my iPad, I read the name El Questro for the first and it happened when I arrived in Australia last 2013. It is one of the recommended tourist spot that the site is offering. Before, I wonder the reason why, but after reaching El Questro, I understand why. El Questro Wilderness Part is located at El Questro station that now both combines cattle station and tourism. And to come here requires permit to protect the ancient wilderness in Kimberley Region. The photo is part of Day 6 (El Questro Station) of 9 Days Darwin to Broome Overland Adventure Tour October 2016.

One from the group saw a snake within the trail and we were advised to be careful as the trail is beside the water stream or river that crocodiles sightings are possible. Name Of The Place : Gibb River Road – 4WD Road to the Last True Wilderness On Earth

Name Of The Place (Post#47) : Gibb River Road

We took Gibb River Road for days to reach other parts of Kimberly Wilderness. And based on experience while wandering on this unsealed and dirt track, this road goes to the last true wilderness on earth. The road is the gateway to be able to explore amazing wilderness that Kimberly Region is hiding. The road is restricted to 4WD vehicle, opens in dry season, closed in wet and rainy days as this road easily gets flooded. It is advisable to check the road condition before passing it. Traveling this road is not for the faint heart but for the brave one. Name Of The Place : Northern Territory and Western Australia

Name Of The Place (Post#44) : Northern Territory and Western Australia

A border is a division between two places but for me it has significant meaning. Being in a border means being in two place at a point in time whether its international or state border. I experienced crossing the border during the second day of our adventure when we reached the border of Northern Territory and Western Australia. And aside from crossing the border, we change our timezone as the state and territory are in different timezone. Australia or let’s be specific, Northern Territory boasted many of its huge national parks and one of them to enjoy is Judbarra or Gregory National Park. The park still considered religious place even up to this moment for Australian aboriginal people who own and protects the said park. And the park itself showcases the amazing arts stenciled in almost all parts of the escarpment walls.
